A walking we will go….
Lexi and I have a groove when we walk. We fall into a nice rhythm. It calms us both, we breathe in fresh air, we feel the warmth of the sun on our bodies and the cool breeze on our skin. Since I carry her in either our Ergo Carrier or Bjorn, we are quite literally walking heart to heart. I’m convinced that the beating of our hearts gets in sync as we stroll. Sometimes Lexi is looking from side to side, checking everything out, completely enthused by what she is discovering. Other times, she rests her head on my chest and closes her eyes, falling asleep with each passing step. Either way, we are together and in sync.
My mother gave me some advice when I was going through a particularly difficult time. She told me that one of the best ways to have a tough conversation is to have it while walking with that person. And how right she was. Today, it is often while walking that my husband and I talk about those not so fun topics. But I walks are more than an outlet for an uncomfortable conversation, it’s a nice way to connect and the perfect time to catch up on the days events and happenings.
Today I carry Lexi on our walks, before I know it, she’ll be holding my hand and then scampering ahead while I try to keep up. I hope that as Lexi gets older, we make walking together part of our rituals. Our way to connect and stay in sync.
Authors Note: Some of my favorite places to walk in LA are: Santa Monica Mountains (pick a trail, any trail), Huntington Gardens in Pasadena (particulary fond of the Japanese Gardens), anywhere along the beach or simply around the block.
